FARM DAMS ISSUE

A statewide, live interactive broadcast to announceand discuss the recommendations by the Victorian Farm Dams (Irrigation) Review Committee on the Sustainable Water Resources Management and Farm Dams discussion paper has been co-ordinated by the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF).

As a result of this review, it is likely that all farm dams for irrigation and/or commercial use, will require licencing.   This would fall under the Murray Darling Basin ‘CAP’ and consequently farmers seeking to build a new dam on their property will have to purchase water from an existing licence holder on the open market.

TAFCO and the Ovens Valley Branch are pleased to work together and offer all interested persons an invitation to attend this important broadcast at:

Refresher courses are now required every 5 years – any person who has completed the full two day Farm Chemical User Course in 1995 or before, should undertake a Refresher Course.

drumMUSTER

The Alpine Shire have scheduled another drumMUSTER, for farmers to dispose of their empty cleaned chemical containers.  This will be held in Myrtleford and the Kiewa Valley on the 5th February 2000.  Watch local papers for more information.

TAFCO Coolstore Project:

After minor delays, the new storage facility at 231 Myrtle Street Myrtleford is underway with the footings to the concrete slab poured on Friday 1st December, 2000.

The project should be completed early in the New Year.

 

Victoria’s Community Capacity Building Initiative

TAFCO has offered support to the Myrtleford Community in an Application to be considered as one of 10 community’s to be selected for Victoria’s Community Capacity Building Initiative.
The State Government has allocated $3 million over the next 3 years towards this project.

The project aims to create 10 self directed and motivated rural communities, viable and positive, able to respond quickly to systemic change and participate in public affairs and the processes of all levels of government.

Flexible Learning Project

Goulburn Ovens TAFE have secured funds to conduct establish a Flexible Learning Network based in Myrtleford.  This project will be aimed at establishing flexible IT training (computer & internet skills) to viticulturists and horticulturists throughout the Alpine Valleys.

Waterline

A reminder to all irrigators on regulated streams within the Ovens Catchment - Diverters irrigating on the regulated sections of the Buffalo, Ovens (from Buffalo River & Ovens River junction) and King Rivers are required to place orders for water diverted from these streams.

The information received from Waterline is used by local Diversion Inspectors to make released from Lake Buffalo and Lake William Hovell into each river system.

Waterline has proven itself as an effective tool to conserve water and improve the efficient management of a limited resource.GMW customers are reminded that Water Ordering is now a condition of your Diversion Licence as is supported by your local Water Services Committee.  If any Diverter requires a Waterline demonstration, please contact:
